Mixed poultry grit for laying hens. It is a combination of flint (brown stones) that chickens use in their gizzard for grinding up food. Limestone (grey stones) which are fast acting calcium. Oyster shell which is slow acting calcium.
The grit needs to be fed in its own feeder or container which needs to be kept out of the rain. The limestone in it will dissolve and turn into a grey sludge if it gets wet. You should feed mixed poultry grit in a feeder rather than throw it on the ground. It is a waste of your money to scatter it around.
Oyster shell stays in the birds system longer than the limestone. This means it is still available when the hens are in full shell production overnight.
Please note that mixed poultry grit is not for the crop as some people believe. The gizzard is the organ in chickens which grinds up food. The flint in grit is used as a sort of millstone effect.
Chickens will eat the grit as and when they feel they need it. If your shell quality deteriorates, then you may have to do a very light sprinkle on top of their pellets just to encourage them to see it as food.
Sold in 1.5kg recycled tubs.
