Chicken varieties are extraordinary
It doesn’t matter how many chickens you think you know, because the marvellous thing about chickens is the huge variety of breeds. There are over 300 different kinds of chicken. Each of the breeds also have different colour variations so there is plenty of choice. Keeping a flock of chickens of all the same type is also not necessary. You can have wildly different birds and even be able to tell them apart at a distance. How good is that?
The purpose of this page therefore is to give you a little taster of information on just a few of these breeds. We have in the past kept and bred most of these, but we have chosen to concentrate on a few which are listed on the chickens for sale page on our website
Is it easy to find all the chicken varieties?
Some chicken varieties are harder to source than others because some chicken breeders only keep the most popular chickens. Some chickens therefore have become rare, and even some are critically endangered. Egg colour is a popular reason for obtaining a particular kind of chicken. Blue, white or very dark brown eggs are usually top of the search list for a lot of people. The not so popular breeds, but in our view the more interesting breeds, are worth seeking out. The Rare Breeds Survival Trust lists all the most endangered chicken varieties. Marsh Daisy, Ixworth, La Fleche, Norfolk Grey are all on their list because not enough breeders are keeping them.
